Frequently Asked

Questions patients ask us most

Can a pharmacist help with back pain?

Yes. Our pharmacists can advise on appropriate over-the-counter pain relief and simple self-care measures for everyday back pain.

When should back pain be checked urgently, not just managed at home?

Get urgent medical attention (GP, urgent care, or A&E) the same day if back pain comes with numbness or weakness in your legs, loss of control over your bladder or bowel, pain following a significant fall or injury, or unexplained weight loss alongside the pain. These are uncommon, but they need same-day assessment, not a pharmacy visit.

How long should I try self-care before seeing someone?

Most everyday back pain improves within a few weeks with simple self-care and appropriate pain relief. If it isn't improving after that, or it's affecting your daily activities significantly, it's worth discussing with your pharmacist or GP about next steps, which may include a physiotherapy referral.
